Russian Drone with R-60 Missile: A New Threat to Ukrainian Aviation.
According to ТСН: In Chernihiv, a Russian drone was recorded falling during an air alert. Local Telegram channels report that a video showing the drone over the buildings was filmed at the scene.
Incident Details
Head of the Chernihiv MVA Dmytro Bryzhynskyi noted online:
“A UAV has been recorded falling in the city. Information on the consequences is being clarified.”
He added that as a result of the drone's fall, a private house was damaged, but there are no casualties.
The city council also clarified that the drone fell outside of Chernihiv, in an area that is not part of the city's administrative boundaries.
Threat from New Missiles
Interestingly, a class 'air-to-air' R-60 missile was found on the Russian strike drone 'Shahed'. This creates new threats for military aviation and the aircraft of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, especially for crews that lower speed or perform maneuvers in search of 'Shaheds'. However, this missile is not a significant threat to F-16 fighters. Aviation expert Valerii Romanenko believes that the mass use of R-60 on 'Shaheds' is unlikely due to the limited supply of old missiles and their weight.
Thus, the incident in Chernihiv underscores the escalating threat from drones on Ukrainian territory. The falling of drones may indicate an activation of hostile actions and lead to new challenges for Ukraine’s defense strategy. Meanwhile, experts argue that new technologies should not be overestimated, as most of them still have their limitations.
