Public Fury Over Asphalt Encasing a Tree's Base

According to TSN.ua: In Kyiv's Darnytskyi district, along Borova Street, municipal workers poured asphalt around a tree while repairing a sidewalk, effectively sealing off its root system from essential water absorption. This sparked widespread anger among residents, who condemned the decision as harmful to the urban greenery. Under mounting criticism, city utility crews have now started removing the asphalt to correct the mistake.

The sidewalk renovation was commissioned by the capital construction department of the Darnytskyi district state administration. However, the Department of Transport Infrastructure of the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) has stated it was not involved in these works. A spokesperson for the KCSA clarified:

“This sidewalk is not under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transport Infrastructure. Therefore, no restoration or repair of the asphalt-concrete surface was carried out by employees of enterprises subordinate to the Department.”

Why Preserving Urban Green Spaces Matters

The incident has reignited debate over how city maintenance projects should accommodate natural features like trees, ensuring that repairs do not compromise plant health or ecological balance. On a separate note, a large industrial fire broke out near Korchuvate in Kyiv on March 26—though unrelated to this event, it underscores the need for swift emergency responses from municipal services across various scenarios.

The public backlash over the tree being paved over highlights the critical importance of integrating environmental considerations into infrastructure work. Protecting green spaces in cities is vital for sustaining ecological health and improving residents' quality of life. At the same time, the industrial fire serves as a reminder that utility services must remain prepared to act quickly in emergencies, a key aspect of their responsibilities.
