700 cats rescued from frontline areas now housed in 11 apartments by volunteers in Zaporizhzhia.
A cat shelter in Zaporizhzhia
According to UATV: Volunteers in Zaporizhzhia have set up a shelter for 700 cats rescued from conflict zones near the front line. Most of these animals were evacuated from the outskirts of Orikhiv and Hulyaipole. To ensure the cats’ comfort, the volunteers have prepared 11 apartments and are actively seeking new families for them—so far, the organization has already found homes for 400 of the animals.
The volunteers are deeply involved in evacuating animals from active combat areas, providing medical care after their rescue. A critical part of their work involves setting up quarantine zones, as the animals cannot be mixed together.
As volunteer Viktoriia Skylsara explained, 'We can’t mix them. A quarantine zone is necessary—this is extremely challenging.'
This work demands significant effort and resources, prompting the organization to also search for additional spaces to house the animals.
Living conditions for the cats
The volunteers not only rescue cats but also ensure they have proper living conditions. In addition to the main apartments, their shelters include private sectors where volunteers care for 40 to 50 animals each.
Viktoriia Skylsara noted, 'Just 'Koshkin Dom' has 11 apartments, plus there are volunteers with private sectors.'
Through these efforts, the volunteers are doing everything possible to rescue and support the animals, striving to find them new families.
This volunteer initiative in Zaporizhzhia represents a crucial step in ensuring the safety and well-being of animals affected by the war. Alongside rescuing cats, the organization also raises public awareness about the issue of stray animals and the need for their adaptation into new homes. The volunteers’ work highlights the importance of compassion and responsibility toward the lives of four-legged creatures that need support during difficult times.
