Hungarian Delegation Visits Kyiv

According to TSN.ua: A Hungarian delegation, led by Gabor Capek, has arrived in Kyiv for discussions concerning the 'Friendship' oil pipeline. Hungary has expressed serious concerns over the halted oil supply and is demanding an inspection of the infrastructure. Gabor Capek noted that the delegation intends to hold talks not only with representatives from Ukraine's energy sector but also with diplomats and a representative from the European Commission.

Formation of an Investigative Commission

On March 4, the Hungarian government decided to establish a special investigative commission to assess the condition of the 'Friendship' pipeline. The commission's members are:

  • Gabor Capek,
  • an oil industry expert,
  • a state official specializing in international relations,
  • and an energy market analyst.

Commission members have already held consultations in Bratislava with representatives from the Slovak energy sector.

The Hungarian representatives entered Ukraine under the general rules applicable to citizens of the Schengen Zone. This diplomatic engagement occurs against a complex political backdrop. Notably, both Hungary and Slovakia have blocked a decision to provide Ukraine with a loan of approximately 90 billion euros, despite the International Monetary Fund approving an $8.1 billion loan program for Ukraine in late February. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also made strong statements regarding the necessity of restoring the pipeline's operation.

Consequently, the Hungarian delegation's visit to Kyiv underscores the urgency of energy supply security and stability in the region, as well as the complexity of political relations between the countries involved.

The current situation with the 'Friendship' pipeline remains critically important for the energy security of both Ukraine and Hungary, with potential implications for broader economic and political relations across Europe.
