A 10-Year Security Pact Between Ukraine and Bulgaria: What It Means for Both Nations.
Security Cooperation Agreement Signed by Ukraine and Bulgaria
According to UATV: On March 30, Ukraine and Bulgaria entered into a decade-long security cooperation agreement, encompassing military assistance and joint arms production. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Bulgarian Prime Minister Andriy Gyurov signed the document on behalf of their respective countries. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the signing, calling it a significant step toward strengthening bilateral ties amid ongoing regional tensions.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated: 'We have signed a security agreement between our nations. Our teams worked on this for a long time, and I am very pleased that we now have this 10-year accord between our states.'
Andriy Gyurov also emphasized the agreement's importance, saying: 'Today, together with the president, we signed a long-prepared security cooperation agreement. I am glad we were able to accomplish this.'
Key Provisions of the Agreement
Under the new pact, Bulgaria will leverage the SAFE program for joint weapons manufacturing. Additionally, Ukraine expects to receive 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually via the so-called 'Vertical Corridor.' President Zelenskyy noted:
'If there are certain obstacles from some European representatives regarding gas, this corridor will allow Ukraine to get 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year.'
Bulgaria is also considering transferring two nuclear reactors to Ukraine for the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant. Andriy Gyurov commented on this issue:
- 'We are discussing the possibility of transferring these reactors into Ukraine's ownership. At the moment, there is a parliamentary vote confirming that any transfer of ownership must be approved by parliament.'
Notably, Bulgaria has scheduled early elections for April 19 and has approved its national contribution to the NATO PURL program. These developments could influence the future trajectory of cooperation between Ukraine and Bulgaria.
This agreement marks a crucial milestone in deepening military and energy links between the two countries, especially given the growing geopolitical challenges in the region. Joint arms production and gas supply arrangements hold strategic importance for both nations. However, upcoming events—such as Bulgaria's elections—may affect the pact's implementation and the overall direction of their partnership.
