Lithuanian President Sets 2030 as Target for Ukraine's EU Membership.
Lithuanian Leader's Statement on Ukraine's EU Aspirations
According to Novyny.live: During a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on January 25, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda declared that Ukraine should become a member of the European Union by 2030. He emphasized that securing Ukraine's accession is a crucial objective for the current generation. Nausėda stated that having a clear 2030 target provides Ukraine with a definitive goal to work towards, offering a roadmap for its political and economic future.
The Path to Ukraine's European Integration
President Nausėda acknowledged that Ukraine's integration process into the EU will be challenging. He outlined that the closure of all negotiation clusters is planned for 2026, which would allow Ukraine to make the necessary preparatory strides. Nausėda expressed Lithuania's readiness to use this interim period to support Ukraine in its European ambitions. He also indicated that full EU membership for Ukraine could be feasible as early as 2027. This statement comes as Ukraine continues its reform efforts while defending itself against Russian aggression.
“Ukraine's accession to the EU must become the task of our generation. Why did we say by 2030? The process is not that simple,” noted Gitanas Nausėda.
The Lithuanian president's remarks underscore the EU's commitment to supporting nations seeking closer integration, particularly given the current geopolitical climate. For Ukraine, EU membership represents a vital step toward strengthening its security and economic stability. The establishment of a clear 2030 deadline is also intended to mobilize the efforts of the Ukrainian government and society to implement the required reforms and adaptation processes.
