Ukraine Calls for Russia's Expulsion from IAEA Board Over Nuclear Plant Attacks.
Ukraine Seeks Russia's Removal from IAEA Governing Body
According to UATV: In response to recent Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which pose a direct threat to nuclear safety, Ukraine has formally initiated a call for Russia's expulsion from the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors. Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, during an emergency meeting, stated that Russia is deliberately targeting electrical substations that provide external power to Ukrainian nuclear power plants, thereby knowingly undermining the country's nuclear security. This move highlights the severe risks to facilities that are under international safeguards.
On the night of January 30, Russian drones struck Zaporizhzhia, injuring two women. Separately, on January 30, a passenger bus in Kherson came under fire, resulting in the driver's death and injuries to five passengers. Minister Shmyhal emphasized the urgent need for tangible accountability for these acts of aggression that violate nuclear safety protocols.
Ongoing Threats to Critical Infrastructure
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has already experienced 12 complete blackouts. Despite a so-called 'energy truce,' Russian military forces have shifted their focus from energy infrastructure to targeting transportation hubs. Attacks continue on Kherson and cities in the Dnipropetrovsk region, most heavily on Nikopol. Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the Head of the Ukrainian President's Office, noted that Russia has refrained from strikes until February 1, taking advantage of a temporary thaw, but a decision to resume attacks is expected once extreme temperature peaks return.
"These events underscore the grave threat posed by Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and the critical importance of an international response to these actions." — Mykhailo Podolyak
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has also appealed to Vladimir Putin to halt the shelling of Kyiv. This situation reflects the escalating regional tension and underscores the necessity for strengthened international support for Ukraine. The demand for Russia's removal from the IAEA board signals the severity of the threat Russian actions pose not only to Ukraine but to global nuclear security as a whole. The international community's response to these developments could significantly influence the future course of the conflict and regional stability.
