A Canadian Price Check: A Ukrainian's Grocery Comparison.
Grocery Price Analysis: Canada vs. Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Anastasiia, a Ukrainian woman now living in Montreal, has compared the cost of basic food items in Canadian supermarkets to prices back in Ukraine. Her study examined the prices of vegetables, meat, dairy, and fish. For context, such comparisons are often used to gauge the cost of living differences between countries, which is crucial for immigrants and economic observers.
In Canada, the cost of fruits and vegetables varies significantly. For instance, half a kilogram of apples can be found on sale for 0.88 Canadian dollars (approximately 25 hryvnias), while the regular price reaches 3 dollars (85 hryvnias). Tomatoes are priced at 2 Canadian dollars per kilogram on sale (56.7 hryvnias), with a base price of 8 dollars (226.8 hryvnias).
Anastasiia notes that meat products are particularly expensive in Canada. A nearly 2-kilogram pack of chicken breast costs 20 Canadian dollars (567 hryvnias), and 450 grams of beef comes to roughly 17 dollars (482 hryvnias). Regarding dairy, 300 grams of cheese is priced at 3 Canadian dollars (85.05 hryvnias), while 2 liters of milk costs 5 dollars (141.75 hryvnias).
How Ukrainian Prices Compare
The analysis of a typical Ukrainian grocery basket reveals significant price differences. In Ukraine:
- 200 grams of butter costs 110 hryvnias;
- a 900 ml bottle of milk is 57 hryvnias;
- beef is 389 hryvnias per kilogram;
- chicken fillet is 215-230 hryvnias;
- tomatoes are 171.66 hryvnias per kilogram;
- cucumbers are 201.58 hryvnias per kilogram.
Anastasiia also shared her thoughts on sausage prices, noting that it averages 10–15 dollars for 600 grams, which is approximately 283–425 hryvnias. In her opinion,
"this is the cheaper product choice. If you want to buy something of higher quality, you have to go to the market, but the price there can be five times higher."
Therefore, the analysis shows that grocery prices in Canada can be both advantageous and considerably higher compared to those in Ukraine.
This comparison provides valuable insight for Ukrainians considering a move to Canada or those simply curious about living costs abroad. The disparity in prices for staple goods can significantly impact the budgets of families residing in Montreal. Furthermore, such information aids in understanding the economic landscapes and consumer habits of both nations.
