German Military to Train with Ukrainian Instructors Against Potential Russian Threat to NATO.
Ukrainian Military Instructors to Train German Armed Forces
According to TSN.ua: German armed forces will receive training from Ukrainian military instructors to prepare for a potential Russian attack on NATO by 2029. Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, the commander of the German army, stated that preparations are being made for this deadline, noting that
"we have high expectations"and emphasizing that
"that's practically the day after tomorrow. We have no time".
An agreement to send Ukrainian military instructors to German army schools was finalized last month. The initial contingent of Ukrainian instructors is expected to number in the 'mid-double digits'. These instructors will share their expertise in the following areas:
- artillery
- engineering
- armored operations
- drone warfare
- command and control
This collaboration marks a significant shift, as Germany has been actively training Ukrainian troops on Marder infantry fighting vehicles, Leopard tanks, howitzers, and air defense systems since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Freuding remarked that
"the fact that they are now coming to us as instructors reflects a security partnership on equal terms".
Germany's Financial and Strategic Measures
Germany is currently shifting its focus to preparing its army and homeland defense, allocating hundreds of millions of euros for state-of-the-art weaponry. These measures underscore the country's serious approach to bolstering its defensive capabilities in the face of growing threats from Russia.
The military training cooperation between Ukraine and Germany highlights a deepening security partnership within a new geopolitical reality. Germany, traditionally cautious in matters of military support, is now actively leveraging Ukrainian combat experience to strengthen its own defense readiness, a move with potential strategic importance for European security. This development also illustrates how the war in Ukraine has reshaped the military strategies of NATO members, particularly in terms of intensifying defense cooperation and preparing for emerging threats. The exchange of expertise is now flowing in both directions, reflecting the profound impact of the ongoing conflict on European defense postures.
