Passengers Take Note: Ukraine's Railways Revise Safety Rules Amid Russian Strikes.
New Safety Measures for Ukraine's Railways
According to TSN.ua: On March 24, 2026, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of JSC 'Ukrzaliznytsia,' announced updated safety protocols for passenger trains during a press conference. The decision comes in response to escalating threats from Russian forces, following attacks that have caused casualties and damaged rail infrastructure. These changes reflect the urgent need to protect travelers in a war zone where railways are frequent targets.
In January 2026, a strike on the Barvinkove station killed six passengers, highlighting the grave dangers facing rail transport in Ukraine. Additional attacks have been recorded in Mykolaiv, where a civilian commuter train was hit, resulting in one fatality. A large-scale Russian assault also damaged railway infrastructure across multiple sections, further complicating operations and endangering lives.
Updated Safety Protocols
Pertsovskyi noted that over 4,000 company employees have been trained on the new safety protocols.
“They will also be available online,”he added, emphasizing the importance of training to ensure passenger safety.
Key safety changes highlighted by experts include:
- If a station has a shelter, it must be inspected before departure.
Experts also warn that “the target is the locomotive.” Russian forces, they say, primarily aim for traction equipment, so passengers should immediately move away from the main source of danger. They add that being “trapped inside” a carriage makes it harder to escape or take cover in a confined space. Sound monitoring on trains is also a concern, as it is much more difficult to hear an incoming missile or drone.
Overall, the new safety protocols are designed to reduce risks for passengers and ensure their security during travel. Ukrzaliznytsia continues to refine its safety system amid growing threats from the adversary.
The safety rule changes announced by Ukrzaliznytsia reflect the current situation in Ukraine, where rail transport faces serious threats. Employee training and new safety protocols aim not only to reduce risks but also to raise passenger awareness of potential dangers. In light of recent attacks, these measures are a critical step in ensuring railway safety and saving citizens' lives.
