Scheduled Power Outages Begin in Ukraine on March 20: When to Expect Blackouts.
Ukraine Introduces Hourly Power Cuts
According to Novyny.live: Starting March 20, 2023, Ukraine will enforce scheduled power outages between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. This measure follows Russian drone and missile strikes that have severely damaged the country's energy infrastructure. These restrictions are essential to keep the power grid stable during the ongoing crisis.
Why the Restrictions Are in Place
The reasons for these limitations are clear. Russian attacks have caused major damage to the energy sector, a fact acknowledged at the state level. Specifically, only 3.5 GW of generation capacity has been restored out of over 9 GW lost due to these assaults. As a result, Ukraine's energy company 'Ukrenergo' urges the public to use electricity sparingly when it is available according to the schedule.
Actions by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ministry of Energy are also aimed at improving the situation. On March 14, 2023, the president signed a decree to develop resilience plans for cities and regions. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced efforts to source equipment for repairing thermal power plants from European countries, highlighting active steps to rebuild Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
The introduction of hourly power cuts in Ukraine is a response to serious challenges posed by military actions that have damaged the energy infrastructure.
Restoring capacity is a top priority for the government, as grid stability is critical for the country's functioning. The initiatives from the president and the Ministry of Energy reflect a systematic approach to addressing energy security, a key concern amid the current war.
Efforts to restore and modernize energy capacity could lay the foundation for future stability and growth in Ukraine's economy.
