Ukraine is building a second European railway line to Poland: project details for 190 million euros.
According to inkorr.com: Construction has started in Ukraine for a second European-standard railway line that will connect the Polish border with the Sknyliv station, near Lviv. This was announced on November 7 by Oleksiy Kuleba, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction and the Minister of Community and Territorial Development. The information about the project launch was published by Visit Ukraine.
The European railway line is 80 kilometers long
The construction is being carried out in cooperation with the European Commission in the field of transport. The opening ceremony was also attended by Magda Kopczyńska, the Director of Transport at the European Commission. This is already the second such project in Ukraine: the first European railway line was launched in September, connecting Chop with Uzhhorod.
The new line will be 80 km long and will become part of the European transport network TEN-T, ensuring direct connection between Lviv and Poland.
Key parameters of the project:
- financing — 73.5 million euros in grants from the European Commission;
- total cost — about 190 million euros;
- completion date — by the end of 2027.
The European railway line as part of Europe's security belt
Oleksiy Kuleba noted that the construction of the European railway line has not only transport but also strategic significance:
“Such projects are part of the security not only of Ukraine but also of the European Union. Every euro invested in Ukraine's transport system is a contribution to the stability and protection of the EU borders.”
He also emphasized that the expansion of railway infrastructure will contribute to a faster integration of Ukraine into the European transport space, increase freight and passenger flows, and strengthen logistics connections with EU countries.
After construction is completed, European-standard trains will be able to run without transfers between Lviv and Polish cities, significantly shortening travel time and simplifying cross-border connections.
This project is of great importance for the development of Ukraine's railway infrastructure, enhancing its capability to integrate with European countries. Thanks to the new tracks, Ukraine will not only improve transport connections but will also become more attractive for international transportation, which can stimulate economic development in the region.
