Ukraine's Parliament Approves New Law for Families of Fallen Soldiers.
Bill No. 13646 on Social Protection for Military Personnel
According to Novyny.live: On February 25, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, passed Bill No. 13646, designed to enhance social protections for its armed forces. This legislation introduces changes to benefits for service members and establishes new payments for the families of soldiers killed in action. This move comes as Ukraine continues its defense against the ongoing Russian invasion, highlighting efforts to support those on the front lines.
Key Changes to Compensation
Under the new provisions, families of the deceased will receive a one-time payment of 15 million hryvnias. This amount will be calculated taking into account any payments the family already received during the search for a missing soldier. Once the maximum sum of 15 million hryvnias is paid, the family becomes eligible for a survivor's pension. Additionally, families of personnel missing in action will receive a monthly payment of 120,000 hryvnias.
The changes to the compensation mechanism for families of fallen soldiers will take effect on March 1, 2026. Ukraine's Ministry of Defense stated that
"the law eliminates discrimination and the sense of injustice between families who have suffered the same loss"— Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Furthermore, Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation, emphasized that
"Bill No. 13646 regulates social guarantees for defenders"— Mykhailo Fedorov.
The adopted bill aims to improve social conditions for military personnel and their families, representing a significant step in providing support for those defending the country. The implementation of these new social protection norms reflects the state's commitment to the welfare of its defenders and their relatives, particularly amid the protracted conflict. This decision may also serve as a crucial factor in boosting the morale of troops and their loved ones during a difficult period.
