A GUR Veteran's Life Transformed: Losing Both Legs in a Kharkiv Operation.
Naum's Story
According to Novyny.live: A veteran of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR), known by the call sign 'Naum,' endured a severe trial when he lost both legs in a drone attack in Zaporizhzhia in 2024. His journey stands as a testament to remarkable courage and resilience. Naum recounts his military service, a pivotal operation in the Kharkiv region, the injury he sustained, and his subsequent rehabilitation.
The Kharkiv Offensive
Naum participated in a successful Kharkiv operation where Ukrainian forces reclaimed approximately 400 hectares of territory. During this combat mission, he was wounded by an anti-tank shell. Reflecting on the incident, Naum stated:
“I was lucky it was an anti-tank shell, not a fragmentation one, but a shaped charge, so it didn't blow my legs off, it burned them off.” — Naum
His account starkly illustrates the brutal realities and constant dangers faced by soldiers on the front lines.
Following his injury, Naum underwent a rehabilitation and prosthetic fitting process that typically lasts about two months. Demonstrating extraordinary determination, he completed it in just three weeks. He took his first steps on his new prosthetics on January 29. The electronic Genium x4 prosthetic leg he received costs 1,400,000 hryvnias, highlighting the immense financial burden of advanced medical care and veteran support. The ongoing war has created a significant need for such specialized, costly rehabilitation.
Naum has also expressed a firm desire to return to active duty, stating:
“When mass mobilization begins, I won't be one of those who gets tossed into a bus.” — Naum
His words reveal an unbreakable will and a continued commitment to defending his country, despite the profound challenges he has overcome.
Naum's story is a powerful example of the indomitable spirit of Ukrainian soldiers who, despite severe injuries and physical limitations, strive to return to service. His experience underscores the critical importance of comprehensive medical rehabilitation and sustained support for veterans who require high-quality prosthetics and other aid to rebuild their lives. In the context of the prolonged conflict, stories like Naum's serve as a poignant reminder of both the human cost of war and the extraordinary heroism displayed daily by military personnel.
