Odessa Region Court Delivers Verdict on Soldier
According to Novyny.live: A court in Ukraine's Odessa region has sentenced a soldier to 10 years and 6 months in prison for desertion, weapons theft, and forming a criminal gang to carry out attacks. This case highlights the severe legal consequences for military personnel who commit serious crimes during wartime.
The serviceman stole a TT pistol and 16 rounds of ammunition on May 12, 2023. He then deserted his military unit in the Sumy region. Subsequently, he illegally acquired two M67 grenades, an F-1 grenade, and a DM-51 grenade. On May 16, 2023, the man attacked a driver in the village of Oleksandrivka. He was apprehended following a pursuit by authorities.
Criminal Charges and Final Sentence
The court found the soldier guilty under multiple articles of the Criminal Code. The final punishment is 10 years and 6 months of imprisonment with property confiscation. The court partially added a sentence from a prior conviction dated November 10, 2025, to be served consecutively.
This verdict underscores the gravity of crimes involving weapons theft and desertion, particularly within the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Such incidents can endanger both military personnel and civilians, which is why the state continues to implement measures to combat these offenses. The ruling also serves as a deterrent to other military personnel who might consider similar actions.
