Consequences for Soldiers Who Leave Their Units Without Authorization

According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian military personnel who abandon their posts without permission retain the right to choose a new unit and position only until a court delivers a verdict. Following a conviction, the procedure for returning to military service changes significantly, which can profoundly impact their future career and service conditions. A representative from the 3rd Army Corps recruitment center, using the call sign 'Coach,' explained the challenges these service members face and the moral dimensions of their choices. This situation arises within the context of ongoing military conflict, where personnel management and discipline are critical operational concerns.

Reasons for Desertion and Ethical Considerations

Conflicts with commanding officers are cited as one reason for leaving units.

"It could be a simple argument with your commander," noted Coach.
Soldiers who make the decision to leave cannot simply wait out the situation in safety, as 'there is no moment to sit it out, where someone will forget about you.' After a court ruling, legal norms complicate the process of rejoining the armed forces, and the right to choose a specialization is forfeited.

The moral implications and service conditions post-conviction are also a cause for concern. Coach emphasized that the path to a correctional colony can involve several months in a pre-trial detention center.

"From a correctional colony, you can only end up in an assault unit, and you must serve there for a year without leave," he stated.
Soldiers often contemplate the consequences of their actions, with one convicted individual remarking, "what are 5-6 years for me, when my children are growing up there?"

Coach added,

"It is your decision. We are looking for people who, of their own free will, join a better unit."
Consequently, the new rules and procedures concerning soldiers who desert their units require careful examination and discussion.

This scenario highlights the difficult ethical choices military personnel confront during conflict. Unauthorized absence from a unit can have serious repercussions not only for a career but also for personal life, including family relationships. Understanding the legal consequences and moral weight of such decisions is especially crucial in a theater of war, where every choice can have far-reaching effects.
