Ukraine's Accession to NATO: MP Explained Why the 'German Option' Won't Work.
The head of the committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Oleksandr Merezhko, stated that the 'German option' for Ukraine's accession to NATO is not correct. He explained that comparing the Ukrainian situation with the GDR-FRG model is incorrect because the GDR was not annexed by the Soviet Union, while Ukrainian territories are currently occupied by Russia. Merezhko emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and the principles of the UN. He also noted that the possibility of a temporary political renunciation of Ukraine's territories is not being discussed within the parliamentary dimension of diplomacy.
Merezhko condemned Russia's actions in the occupied territories of Ukraine, pointing to genocide and attempts to destroy Ukrainian culture and identity. He warned about the dangers of such policies and stressed the necessity of adhering to the fundamental principles of international law. Merezhko believes that ensuring peace and security is impossible without adhering to international law and the principles of the UN, and there should be no compromises on this matter.
