The $59 Billion Self-Help Industry: Why We Can't Resist.
Self-Help – The Nature of Our Aspiration
According to Vox: When you visit the self-help section of a bookstore, you will find countless books with various advice. These can be publications suggesting to 'let go' of your problems, or 'develop atomic habits,' as well as guides on how to worry less.
Despite numerous critics of the multi-billion dollar self-help industry, it remains extremely popular, opening new opportunities for authors and influencers who offer fresh approaches to life. So why are we so drawn to self-help?
Exploring the Culture of Self-Help
This question was explored by author Jessica Lemb-Shapiro in her book Promise Land: My Journey Through America’s Self-Help Culture. She has personal experience in this field herself. “My father was a child psychologist and wrote parenting books. And later I learned he used me as an example,” she says. This observation has given her a certain skepticism towards the self-help culture, prompting her to investigate this topic by trying advice from several books.
Despite the uniqueness of her experience, Lemb notes that it does not differ much from the self-help culture that most people encounter. “These ideas permeate our lives, even if you don’t read self-help books,” she notes in conversation with Vox.
Does Self-Improvement Lead to Isolation?
When it comes to self-improvement, it seems we cannot stop. But does our pursuit of optimization actually lead to loneliness? This is discussed in the podcast Explain It to Me, where Lemb-Shapiro engages in an interesting discussion.
About the Self-Help Industry
The global self-help industry is estimated to be worth $45-59 billion and encompasses not only books but also courses, TikTok videos, and affirmation calendars.
Are self-help books a scam?
This is a complex question. I wouldn’t say it is a scam. There are many good and bad books; if you don’t take everything at face value, you can find what truly helps.
“You can be richer, more attractive, smarter, more popular, faster.”
Why Are We So Drawn to Self-Help?
The fact that our lives can be better is genuinely appealing. It gives us a sense of possibility to reach new heights.
Changes in Self-Help
Recently, self-help has become more accessible and popular, with authors supporting their ideas with scientific research. This elevates the level of discussion and attracts a new audience.
The Problem of Excessive Self-Help
We have indeed become obsessed with self-improvement and productivity. However, this is not always a healthy choice. Self-help books are beginning to replace therapy, but we are losing the opportunity for communication and interaction with our surroundings.
“We are obsessed with self-improvement and productivity. This is not healthy.”
It is important to maintain connections with other people, as communication and community support are extremely important to prevent loneliness and isolation. In today’s world, it is essential not only to strive for personal growth but also to find time for social interaction and support. This can become the foundation of true happiness and harmony in life.
