Climber to be tried for partner's death on Grossglockner: details of the case

According to ТСН: The Austrian Prosecutor's Office has completed the investigation into the death of a 33-year-old tourist who died from hypothermia during a winter ascent of the Grossglockner mountain. Her partner, an experienced climber, is suspected of involuntary manslaughter due to serious negligence, having left the woman alone in extreme conditions.

The investigation established that in January the couple set out to climb Austria's highest peak, which stands over 3,790 meters tall. According to investigators, a few dozen meters from the summit, the woman stopped and could no longer move. Around 2 a.m., the man went for help, leaving her in the cold without shelter. As a result of the severe cold and prolonged exposure without protection, the tourist died.

The role of the responsible guide

Prosecutors note that, given the man's significantly greater experience in high-altitude treks, he should have acted as the responsible guide and provided the woman with the necessary equipment and support. Experts point out several critical mistakes, including: delay in starting the route, lack of proper emergency equipment, the use of suboptimal gear by the woman, and untimely appeal for help.

Evidence and charges

Data from phones, sports watches, photographs, and video materials confirm that the man did not signal for help when a police helicopter flew over them and did not return to the woman in a timely manner due to deteriorating weather conditions. Only at 3:30 a.m. did he contact the rescuers. By the time the rescue team reached the tourist after 10:00 a.m., she was already dead.

The man faces up to three years in prison, and the trial is scheduled for February. The defendant's lawyer claims that the tragedy resulted from a fatal combination of circumstances and notes that his client 'sincerely regrets what happened.'

This tragedy underscores the importance of safety during mountain hikes, where even small mistakes can lead to fatal consequences. The investigation into the case will continue to provoke discussion in society about the duties of climbers and responsibility in dangerous conditions.
