Zelensky named the conditions for elections and a referendum on peace.
Security of elections in Ukraine
According to ТСН: The issue of security becomes paramount in the context of presidential elections or referendums in Ukraine, especially when it comes to sensitive aspects of the peace plan.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated this during a conversation with journalists.
«First of all, the request and message came from the USA. We know that this was also voiced by the Russians. And I have always said: I am not clinging to my seat; we are ready for this. I am politically ready, but we must be legislatively ready so that the elections can then be recognized as legitimate. The second story is security. There must be a safe sky and security everywhere in our territory, at least during the elections or during the referendum. Because a referendum is the same as an election. It is the same process — to give people the opportunity to come and vote. And it is very important that observers are present everywhere», — he said.
In addition, on December 26, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine began work on a draft law that defines the rules for holding elections during wartime. The first meeting of the special working group was held under the leadership of the first deputy head of parliament, Oleksandr Korniienko.
On December 23, President Zelensky noted that a referendum on the 20-point peace agreement could be held simultaneously with the elections. He also added that the agreement could be brought to the Verkhovna Rada for discussion, and security guarantees would only come after its ratification or support from the population.
Thus, the issue of the legitimacy and security of elections remains on the agenda. Proposed legislative initiatives and the president's readiness to cooperate with international partners demonstrate Ukraine's serious intentions to move towards democratic processes despite the challenging situation in the country. Observers and international partners will play an important role in ensuring a transparent and secure electoral process.
