Ukraine Establishes Annual Romanian Language Day

According to TSN.ua: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree instituting a new national holiday in Ukraine: Romanian Language Day, to be observed annually on August 31. The decree, numbered 235/2026, formally recognizes the holiday, highlighting the significance of the Romanian language within the nation's cultural landscape. This move underscores Ukraine's commitment to honoring its diverse linguistic heritage.

President Zelenskyy remarked on the initiative, stating: 'I have signed the relevant decree, so August 31 will now be Romanian Language Day in Ukraine.'

This decision marks a significant step in fostering intercultural relations between Ukraine and Romania, which itself annually celebrates Ukrainian Language Day on November 9.

Legal Rights for Ukrainians Abroad

In a related development supporting citizens abroad, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has backed the nation's accession to the Convention on International Access to Justice. This will enable Ukrainians in 28 countries to receive free legal assistance. The majority of Ukrainians in Romania currently reside under temporary protection status, making such legal support particularly vital for this community.

The establishment of Romanian Language Day is therefore part of a broader strategy to support cultural diversity and the rights of Ukrainians living overseas.

This new holiday is expected to strengthen cultural ties between Ukraine and Romania by raising awareness of Romanian culture within Ukraine. It also emphasizes the importance of supporting the country's linguistic minorities and promotes the development of a multicultural society.
