Zelenskyy Accuses Russia of Ignoring Trump's Request to Halt Energy Strikes.
Ukrainian President's Statement on Russian Assault
According to Novyny.live: During a joint press conference in Kyiv on February 3 with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia violated a request from Donald Trump to refrain from striking Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy emphasized that within a week of this request, Russia launched a massive attack, firing 28 cruise missiles and 43 missiles of various types at Ukraine's energy grid. This attack on critical infrastructure comes as the United States Congress debates further military aid for Ukraine.
The President noted the attack occurred amid severe winter conditions, with temperatures dropping to -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). He described it as a 'record Russian strike' that posed a severe test for the nation.
"Today saw a record Russian strike, a heavy blow, certainly in terms of ballistic weapon use," the president stated.
The PURL Initiative and European Cooperation
Addressing these new challenges, Zelenskyy discussed the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, initiated by the U.S. and NATO. He stressed the urgency of fulfilling these defense packages, saying:
"It is crucial that the PURL packages are filled, and Mark and I will continue working on this."Furthermore, the Ukrainian leader expressed intent to pursue joint arms production with European nations, stating: "We are proposing such production together with Ukraine and with our neighbors in Europe."
This situation underscores the escalating regional tensions and the critical importance of international support for Ukraine. Strikes on energy infrastructure during a deep freeze can have devastating humanitarian consequences, highlighting the need for urgent measures to ensure energy security. Cooperation with NATO and European partners, alongside collaborative arms manufacturing, has become a vital component of strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities against ongoing Russian aggression.
