On Sunday, February 9, an important event for Europe took place - the Baltic states disconnected from the Russian energy grid. Their energy systems are now completely synchronized with the European continental system. This was announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in his evening address.
Ukraine did this back in 2022, and now the Baltic states have also eliminated their dependence. Moscow will no longer be able to use energy as a weapon against the Baltic states. This also means that Europe has become even more unified. This is the course we all in Europe must continue to follow - all across the continent. This is particularly relevant for Central European countries that still have contracts with Russia. We need to work more with America - LNG gas, oil. We need to work more with our partners in neighboring countries within the European Union, in this region, to import the necessary energy. Caucasus, Middle East, North Africa. The less dependence Europeans have on Russia, the sooner we can guarantee reliable security for everyone in Europe. I congratulate our friends - Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia on today's achievement. It is important that Poland is helping, and this repeatedly proves: cooperation among all of us is the independence of each one of us. I am grateful to the European Union for supporting our region, our common security.
According to the president, pressure must also be applied to Russia's attempts to use its tankers, its fleet against Ukraine and all of Europe.
Recently in Ukraine, we expanded the sanctions pressure so that not only tankers from Russia are under sanctions, not only the companies to which they are registered, but also the captains of these vessels, the people who work for the war, feel this pressure. This needs to be supported at the European level - the European Union should join in these energy sector sanctions.
It was previously reported that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania disconnected their energy systems from the Russian-controlled frequency zone.
The disconnection of the Baltic countries will also affect the Kaliningrad region - a Russian exclave that will lose its connection with the energy system of mainland Russia.
However, Moscow was prepared for this scenario. For the past few years, Kaliningrad has been increasing its own generation capacity, and the Kremlin claims that there will be no problems with electricity supply in the region.
