Heat-Related Deaths Could Reach Hundreds of Thousands by 2050 as Climate Change Intensifies.
Climate Change Outlook for 2050
According to TSN.ua: Rising global temperatures are projected to cause hundreds of thousands of additional deaths annually by mid-century, driven largely by reduced physical activity. A study published in The Lancet Global Health estimates that between 470,000 and 700,000 extra premature deaths could occur each year by 2050 due to climate shifts. This research draws on data from 156 countries collected between 2000 and 2022, revealing that each additional month with an average temperature above 27.8°C leads to a 1.5% global rise in physical inactivity. In low- and middle-income nations, that figure climbs to 1.85%.
Economic Fallout and Recommended Actions
Beyond the human toll, the economic consequences are severe, with projected productivity losses reaching $3.68 billion. The sharpest increases in physical inactivity are expected in hotter regions, including Central America, the Caribbean, East Africa, and equatorial Southeast Asia. Notably, the three most recent years on record were the hottest ever observed. Without decisive intervention, global warming threatens to undermine the World Health Organization's target of reducing physical inactivity by 15% by 2030. To counter these impacts, experts recommend:
- Developing heat-resilient urban infrastructure;
- Establishing accessible air-conditioned sports facilities;
- Raising public awareness about the dangers of extreme heat.
These steps are seen as essential for mitigating climate change's effects and safeguarding public health. The report underscores the urgent need for action to curb climate-related health risks and economic costs. Adapting infrastructure to hotter conditions will be critical for maintaining physical activity and overall well-being, particularly in the most vulnerable areas. Implementing heat-reduction strategies could save lives and reduce future financial losses.
