December 29: Memorial Day of the Holy Innocents and Folk Signs for Tomorrow.
According to ТСН: Tomorrow, December 29, marks the Memorial Day of the Holy Innocents killed in Bethlehem in the Orthodox calendar. The evangelist Matthew describes that after the birth of Jesus, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, seeking the 'newborn King of the Jews.' King Herod the Great, fearing the loss of power, ordered the killing of all boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity under the age of two (Matt. 2:16). This decree led to a horrific massacre of innocent children.
The Church regards them as martyrs, as they died for Christ. This phenomenon in theology is called 'baptism by blood' — martyrdom is recognized as the highest expression of Christian witness. Saint Augustine wrote that these children 'could not yet speak, but they already confessed Christ by their death.'
The Church Holiday on December 29 — Memorial Day of Saint Markel the Blessed
Saint Markel was born in the late IV century in a noble Christian family. He received a solid secular and theological education, knew the Holy Scripture and the works of the Church Fathers, and also showed significant spiritual maturity from a young age.
Despite his wonderful opportunities, Markel decided to leave secular life, realizing his calling — to serve God in monastic deeds.
After his tonsure in the Monastery of the Sleepless Monks, founded by the Blessed Alexander Akomit, the brethren chose Markel as the abbot after the death of his superior. Under his leadership, the monastery became a renowned spiritual center of Constantinople.
Saint Markel lived during times of sharp Christological disputes following the Council of Chalcedon in 451. His authority was so great that bishops, monks, and laypeople sought his counsel. He departed to the Lord around 485, after many years of serving as abbot.
