December 5: The Day of Saint Savva the Sanctified and Folk Signs for Tomorrow.
According to ТСН: Tomorrow, December 5, in the Orthodox calendar, it is the day of remembrance of Saint Savva the Sanctified. He was born around 439 AD in the city of Urfa (Syria) in a wealthy and pious family. From a young age, Savva showed great devotion to God. After his parents' death, he distributed his wealth to the poor and went to the desert, first stopping in remote places of Syria, where he spent his days in prayers, fasting, and strict asceticism.
Savva gained popularity as a hermit and teacher, and students began to come to him, eager to follow his austere way of life. He founded one of the first monastic communities in the desert of Palestine, known as the Lavra of Savva the Sanctified, near Jerusalem. This monastery became a model of monastic life: Savva taught the monks not only through strict rules of fasting and prayer but also thanks to his profound spiritual wisdom, love for God, and for his neighbors.
In Savva's life, the struggle against spiritual pride and worldly temptations played an important role. He combined strict asceticism with prayers for all people and assistance to those who needed spiritual support. His disciples described the saint as a person of incredible humility and faith, manifested in his words and deeds.
Saint Savva also actively participated in the religious debates of his time, defending the Orthodox faith against heresies, particularly monophysitism, and supporting the unity of the Church. His authority and example contributed to the spiritual revival of the region and influenced the development of monasticism in the Byzantine Empire.
The saint died around 532 AD, leaving behind numerous disciples, spiritual teachings, and the tradition of Palestinian monasticism, which inspired generations of monks and laypeople.
