According to ТСН: A congested nose is one of the most common symptoms of a cold and seasonal allergies. Breathing can be eased not only with medications but also with certain products. Some of them contain bioactive compounds that reduce inflammation and help clear the nasal passages.
Products That Help Ease Breathing
Warm broth is traditionally considered 'food for recovery,' and for good reason. The liquid helps thin mucus, while steam reduces sinus congestion. Chicken broth is often mentioned because of its mild anti-inflammatory properties and ability to alleviate cold symptoms.
Warm tea has a similar effect. A hot drink moisturizes the mucous membranes, while steam promotes short-term opening of the nasal passages. Green tea contains catechin antioxidants, which may reduce the duration of a runny nose. Herbal teas, such as chamomile, ginger, mint, or elderflower, can also be beneficial, although scientific evidence of their effectiveness is limited.
'Honey added to tea can also be helpful. It has antioxidant and immune-stimulating properties, relieves cough, and promotes the expulsion of phlegm. At the same time, honey is strongly not recommended for children under one year old.'
Spicy food can temporarily 'clear' the nose. Chili pepper contains capsaicin, while wasabi, mustard, and horseradish contain allyl isothiocyanate. These substances irritate the mucous membrane, stimulating mucus production and may quickly reduce congestion. However, excessive amounts of spicy food can lead to the opposite effect—increased inflammation and discomfort.
Unexpected Helpers
Another unexpected helper is pineapple. It contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps thin mucus and has anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, pineapple is rich in vitamin C, which supports the immune system. Some studies indicate a connection between bromelain and relief of sinusitis symptoms, but no final conclusions have been reached yet.
Probiotic yogurt can also be beneficial. Despite the common myth that dairy products 'thicken' mucus, probiotic yogurts have anti-inflammatory properties and contain zinc, which is important for the immune system. Regular consumption of such products may reduce the risk of colds and ease their course. Unsweetened varieties, such as Greek yogurt, are recommended.
At the same time, during nasal congestion, alcohol consumption should be limited, as it promotes dehydration and inflammation, and in sensitive individuals can trigger the release of histamine. It is also undesirable to consume products with a high refined sugar content, which exacerbate inflammatory processes. In some people, symptoms may be aggravated by foods high in histamine—cheeses, processed meats, fermented products, wine, beer, as well as certain vegetables and fruits.
'Doctors emphasize: if congestion does not go away for more than 10 days, and there is a high fever, difficulty breathing, dehydration, or inability to eat and drink, medical assistance should be sought. In such cases, self-treatment can be dangerous.'
During a cold, the body needs support from within, and certain products may help strengthen immunity and alleviate symptoms of the illness. It is important to remember that prevention and timely response to symptoms are key to a quick recovery.
