Ukrainian kopecks will be renamed to steps: when the changes will come into effect.
According to ТСН: Financial analyst Roman Chorny believes that the majority of people's deputies will support the bill on renaming coins, and starting next year Ukrainians will begin to use 50 steps instead of 50 kopecks.
The expert expressed his opinion on the air of "Kyiv 24 live". However, he doubts the long-term existence of the new coin, as its value may decrease due to inflation.
"This is purely a political decision, because when there is a war, spending money on some other things is, in my opinion, completely inappropriate. And now people will hold these steps in their hands and get confused, and it will distract them from some political problems that may occur in our country," he noted.
Chorny also noted that perhaps it is worth abandoning kopecks, but the issue of inflation remains relevant and only intensifies each year.
"And therefore, to say that these steps will live for some long term is impossible. In my opinion, it is a maximum of four years," Chorny explained.
It should be noted that the Verkhovna Rada has already supported in the first reading bill No. 14093, which proposes to rename the change coin of Ukraine. Instead of "kopecks" they propose to introduce the term "step".
This change is part of a broader policy of derussification and deradicalization, covering various spheres of life, including language, culture, and economics. For citizens, the choice of term will not in any way affect the cost or functionality of the coins — it is merely a symbolic gesture that emphasizes Ukraine's independence and identity. Economists note that such reform will also help simplify the circulation of small coins and modernize the monetary system.
