Anna Salivanchuk Calls Out Russian Language Use at Her Son's School—Here's How Teachers Responded.
Anna Salivanchuk's Outrage Over Russian Being Spoken at School
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian actress Anna Salivanchuk has publicly condemned the use of Russian language at her son's school during the ongoing war, sparking heated debate among parents and educators. The incident unfolded one morning during an air raid alert, when she noticed that most children were communicating in Russian. She immediately confronted the students, telling them that speaking Russian under these circumstances was unacceptable.
Teachers later explained that some parents oppose any restrictions on Russian language use, which complicates the learning environment. Salivanchuk stressed the gravity of the language issue, stating:
“I heard everyone speaking Russian. I called them out. I said it’s not okay, it’s shameful—this is the fourth year of war...”
The Language Dilemma Amid Wartime
The actress also addressed other parents directly, saying:
“Dear parents, especially those of my son’s classmates, you may hate me for this, but in the fourth year of a full-scale war, how can anyone say ‘what difference does it make’? It makes a huge difference! People are dying!”
This situation highlights the deep complexity of the language issue in Ukraine during wartime, as well as the challenges children and their parents face in the school environment.
The incident underscores how language debates remain highly relevant in Ukraine, especially given the war and the broader question of national identity. Schools have become not just places of learning, but moral battlegrounds where parents and teachers struggle to balance cultural ties with national consciousness. These discussions are likely to continue as society adapts to the new realities imposed by the conflict.
