Kharkiv Power Grid Disrupted by Major Failure

According to TSN.ua: A significant failure in the power grid has forced emergency electricity blackouts across Kharkiv and its surrounding region. The incident, which occurred on January 31 at 11:00, was triggered by voltage fluctuations that caused a power line between Romania and Moldova to trip offline. This cascading failure is a stark reminder of the interconnected nature of Europe's energy infrastructure. As a result, electric public transport in Kharkiv was temporarily halted, including service on two of the city's three metro lines.

Operations at several boiler houses in the Zlatopilska community were also temporarily suspended. Electrical equipment failed at five out of six of these facilities. Train service on the Saltivska and Oleksiivska metro lines was stopped, and tram and trolleybus routes ceased operation. The city has organized temporary bus routes to compensate, while the Zlatopilska community has implemented emergency outage schedules.

Official Statements and Current Status

According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the situation is linked to an accident within Ukraine's national energy system. A spokesperson for Kharkivoblenergo noted that issues with voltage levels and power supply currently persist. Power is expected to be restored within two to three hours. At 10:42, the 400 kV line between Romania and Moldova and a 750 kV line connecting Ukraine's western and central regions were disconnected.

"This accident highlights the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy system, which depends on the stable operation of international power transmission lines." - Denys Shmyhal

The regional blackout has disrupted not only daily life for Kharkiv residents but also the operation of municipal transport and social facilities. Restoring a stable power supply is critically important for ensuring normal living conditions for the population and the functioning of essential infrastructure.
