Emergency Power Loss Halts Kyiv Metro

According to TSN.ua: A major failure in Ukraine's power grid caused a widespread blackout, forcing the Kyiv metro system to an emergency stop. This incident, which highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure, led to the evacuation of 481 passengers from trains stranded in the tunnels. One train was halted 100 meters from Vokzalna station, while another was stopped nearly a kilometer from Vydubychi station.

The disruption began at 10:42 AM when 400 kV and 750 kV high-voltage power lines failed. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal attributed the emergency shutdowns to a technical malfunction. Service has since been restored across all three metro lines. Trains on the red line are now running at approximately 6-minute intervals, with the blue line also operating normally on a similar schedule.

Metro Service Resumes

On the green line, service has resumed between Chervonyi Khutir and Syrets stations, also with 6-minute intervals. Minister Shmyhal stated that fully stabilizing the national power grid could take between 24 and 36 hours. While metro operations in Kyiv have now normalized, the minister warned of potential challenges to the stability of the country's energy supply in the coming days.

The swift restoration of the metro service demonstrates the effectiveness of the emergency response teams. Despite the temporary inconvenience to commuters, the incident underscored the critical importance of rapid evacuation protocols and crisis management in maintaining public safety during infrastructure failures.
