Azerbaijan Mobilizes Military Following Iranian Drone Strike.
Azerbaijan's Military Mobilization
According to TSN.ua: Azerbaijan has declared a full-scale mobilization, calling up reservists and placing its armed forces on high alert. The Ministry of Defence initiated these measures in response to an act of aggression it says threatens national security. This mobilization order follows a drone attack launched from Iran against Azerbaijani territory, which occurred during a joint US-Israeli military operation.
On March 5, two drones originating from Iran struck the city of Nakhchivan, with one hitting the terminal of the international airport, injuring two people. Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry has condemned the strike as a blatant violation of international law. In response, the Iranian ambassador was summoned to receive a formal diplomatic protest.
Presidential Response and Regional Tensions
President Ilham Aliyev, who serves as Commander-in-Chief, warned that attacks on civilian infrastructure
"will not go unanswered."The situation is further complicated by the significant ethnic Azerbaijani population in Iran, estimated at 15 to 20 million, which exceeds Azerbaijan's own population of roughly 10 million. This demographic reality underscores the complex cross-border ethnic ties that could influence the conflict's trajectory.
The mobilization signals a sharp escalation in regional tensions that could severely strain relations between Baku and Tehran. Azerbaijan's forceful response risks triggering a more serious military confrontation unless a diplomatic solution is swiftly found. The presence of a large Azerbaijani diaspora within Iran adds another layer of complexity, potentially creating internal pressures for both governments as they navigate issues of national security and interest.
