Scientists debunk the myth: how many years a dog actually has in human terms.
According to ТСН: There is a stereotype that one year of a dog's life is equivalent to seven human years, but science denies this simple formula.
New perceptions of dog aging
Professor Trey Ideker from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine notes that comparing a one-year-old dog to a seven-year-old child is not entirely accurate. He explains that physiological maturity in dogs comes much earlier: by nine months, an animal can already have offspring, which does not conform to the 'multiply by seven' formula.
Studying dog age
To more accurately assess the correspondence between the ages of dogs and humans, scientists used an epigenetic clock—a method that determines biological age based on changes in DNA methylation. The study analyzed samples from 104 dogs (mostly Labradors) aged from one month to 16 years, comparing them with data from over 300 people of varying ages.
New age calculation
Results showed that dogs age very quickly in the early stages of life, and after seven years this process slows down. Based on the data obtained, scientists propose a new formula for determining the age of dogs: 16 × ln (age of the dog) + 31.
According to this model, an eight-week-old puppy corresponds to approximately a 9-month-old human, while a one-year-old dog corresponds to a human slightly older than 30. Researchers also emphasize that this formula will require adjustments for different breeds, as aging rates may vary significantly.

These new data could significantly change our understanding of dog age and aging. Now, using scientific methods, we will be able to more accurately assess the physical and emotional state of our four-legged friends and adapt their care accordingly. It is important to remember that each breed has its characteristics, and it is always better to consult veterinarians to ensure the best conditions for our pets.
