Free transportation in Kharkiv remains: the mayor explained the reasons

According to inkorr.com: In Kharkiv, free rides on public transport will continue. The city authorities do not plan to cancel this benefit, introduced during the war. This was stated by Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov in

an interview
with RBC-Ukraine.

Terekhov noted that all types of municipal transport – trams, trolleybuses, metro, and buses – remain free for the city's residents. This decision, in his opinion, helps people save significant amounts each month.

“Trams, trolleybuses, metro, buses – this is municipal transport. We transport for free as it saves 3-4 thousand hryvnias per month for each family. And for retirees, it’s life,” the mayor noted.

Terekhov also talked about actively training female drivers for buses and the metro. This is part of a program aimed at improving safety, equality, and passenger comfort.

The city authorities finance the transport work from the budget, compensating for the expenses of municipal enterprises. Thus, Kharkiv residents can continue to use transport for free.

Currently, free transportation is available for:

  • trams;
  • trolleybuses;
  • metro;
  • municipal buses.

Terekhov emphasized that free transportation will continue as long as the city's financial situation allows it. If resources run out, the mayor promised to honestly inform the residents about it.

“When there are no such opportunities, I will honestly tell Kharkiv residents that we no longer have such opportunities,” he stressed.

Free transportation in Kharkiv was introduced in May 2022, when public transport resumed work after active hostilities. The goal of this initiative is to support people in difficult times and reduce financial pressure on families. Since then, the city continues this program despite economic difficulties.

Earlier we reported that starting from 2026, a

single ticket
is planned to be introduced in Ukraine for all types of transport.

This initiative in Kharkiv has become an important element of social support for the population in wartime conditions, especially for those who have suffered the most from financial difficulties. The experience of Kharkiv can serve as an example for other cities seeking to maintain accessibility of public transport during this challenging time.
