Onion Prices Drop by Half: What a Kilogram Costs This March.
Ukraine Sees Sharp Decline in Bulb Onion Prices
According to TSN.ua: Across Ukraine, the cost of bulb onions has nearly halved compared to the same period last year. Prices have fallen 19% since the beginning of the previous week, now ranging between 3 and 8 hryvnias per kilogram. This downward trend is being observed in most regions of the country. For context, onions are a staple ingredient in many Ukrainian dishes, making these price shifts particularly noticeable for households.
Key Drivers Behind the Price Drop
On average, bulb onions are currently selling for 49% less than they did during the same period in 2025. The primary factor putting pressure on prices is the weather, which has significantly impacted crop yields and overall market supply. This decline in onion costs comes against a backdrop of rising consumer prices across Ukraine. In February 2026, consumer prices increased by 1%, and by the end of March 2026, dairy product prices are expected to rise by up to 12%.
For consumers, the current situation in the bulb onion market is favorable, as lower prices make this product more affordable. However, farmers and suppliers must remain mindful of weather conditions, which could influence future price movements.
The drop in bulb onion prices in Ukraine may point to positive developments in the agricultural sector, as it makes the product more accessible to the public—especially amid overall price hikes for other essential goods. At the same time, growers should prepare for potential market fluctuations driven by weather patterns, which could affect supply and pricing in the months ahead.
