The EU has not unblocked Russian assets: why this threatens Ukraine's security.
According to ТСН: 2025 is a year many will remember as a period of disappointments in various countries, filled with wars, upheavals, and threats. In recent years, the foundations of the world order seemed exceedingly unstable, and post-war stability in Europe is under threat.
"The summit at the end of 2025 became a symbol of the EU's strategic weakness, where leaders once again repeated their statements of support for Ukraine, but failed to make decisive decisions. In particular, Brussels did not unblock the frozen Russian assets, missing the chance to deal a real blow to Moscow and shifting the financial risks onto European taxpayers," the expert notes.
In fact, this was not the worst possible outcome. A significantly worse scenario would have been another unproductive summit that would not have provided Ukraine with any financial resources, leaving it defenseless after aid was depleted in the first half of 2026. The decision made is merely the necessary minimum for the EU, which urgently needs greater geopolitical stability.
"The positive aspect is that an agreement has been reached on financing Ukraine, but this is the smallest common denominator. European leaders are politically weak and cannot cope in a world where old rules no longer apply," he emphasizes.
Existential Question
Several leading European leaders hint that support for Ukraine's military efforts is a critically important issue for the security of the entire continent.
Russia's Influence
European intelligence warns that Moscow may test NATO not only in Ukraine but also in the Baltic states, hoping for indecisiveness from allies and weakening of Article 5. In such a context, abandoning the principles of sovereignty and the right of peoples to choose their own path means a de facto retreat from democracy, says expert Dirnly.
"Depriving people of the right to choose their future means reverting to the rules of the 19th century," he emphasizes, highlighting that this creates a dangerous precedent for future conflicts, particularly with China.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also expressed concerns about the possible outbreak of war in Europe as early as 2026, blaming this on the "decline of Western Europe and the EU," rather than Russian aggression.
"Military tension in Europe is a consequence of the decline of Western Europe and the European Union," he said.
The events of 2025 indicate significant challenges facing Europe. In the context of ongoing threats from Russia and the necessity of supporting Ukraine, EU leaders need to find a way to become more decisive in their actions. Understanding the geopolitical situation is becoming critically important to ensure stability not only in Ukraine but throughout the continent.
