A Chinese man carried a working lighter in his stomach for 30 years: how it was retrieved.
Amazing find in the stomach of a Chinese man
According to ТСН: A 67-year-old man surnamed Deng from Sichuan province, China, discovered that the lighter he swallowed back in the early 1990s was still in his stomach and even continued to work.
Deng admitted that he did so 'on a dare' during a party, trying to prove his bravery, and completely forgot about this incident since then.
The first alarming symptoms, such as bloating and abdominal pain, appeared about a month ago. Initially, the man tried to attribute them to gastroenteritis and self-medicated. However, when his condition worsened and he could not lie down due to severe pain, Deng decided to consult doctors. During an emergency gastroscopy, the medical team found an unusual black cubical object in his stomach, partially damaged by stomach acid. Endoscopic removal proved impossible due to the slippery texture of the object.
When the doctors asked the patient about the origin of this object, Deng recalled the long-ago incident with the lighter. He hoped that it had long left his body, although he sometimes felt unexplained stomach pain for years.
After confirming that it was the lighter, the medical team began to look for a way to safely remove it. Surgical methods turned out to be too risky, and conventional endoscopy did not guarantee success. As a result, the doctors used a special technique called 'condom technique,' during which they wrapped the object before extraction.
After the lighter was removed, it turned out that its casing was partially eaten away by acid, but the gas inside remained, and it continued to work. Doctors explained that this was made possible by the materials used in cheap lighters: polypropylene and ABS plastic have high resistance to acids and can withstand prolonged exposure to gastric juice.
It is worth recalling that a woman who was declared dead woke up in the morgue.
Thus, Deng's case serves as a reminder of the dangers that people can face due to reckless actions. This story emphasizes the importance of consulting doctors when alarming symptoms appear and highlights interesting yet extremely dangerous cases that occur in medical practice.
