According to ТСН: Some people have a high sensitivity to caffeine, so it is important for them to avoid coffee before bedtime. Experts have determined the optimal time for consuming this beverage.

Studies show that caffeine remains active in the body for five to seven hours, and sometimes even longer. This means that coffee consumed at 3 PM may complicate falling asleep in the evening.

Consuming more than 300 mg of caffeine (approximately a few cups of coffee) worsens sleep quality, and caffeine consumed six hours before sleep can take away more than an hour of rest. Caffeine enters the bloodstream about 40 minutes after consuming the drink.

“Caffeine can reduce the deep phases of sleep and shorten total rest time, even if a person feels they have slept normally,” explained neurologist Lynette Gogol.

The doctor also noted that caffeine is a stimulant that triggers the release of the stress hormone cortisol in the body, leading to increased blood sugar levels. After a brief energy boost, the body realizes that this sugar is not necessary, and insulin is activated to lower its level.

It is also worth paying attention to the issue of consuming expired coffee and the consequences it may have.

So, if you plan to have coffee in the afternoon, consider the potential impact on sleep quality. Review your caffeine consumption habits to avoid harming your rest. Giving up coffee before bedtime is a simple yet effective step to improve sleep quality and overall well-being.
