Experts warn: making the bed immediately after waking is harmful to health.
According to ТСН: Many people quickly make their beds in the morning, but experts warn of potential health risks due to this haste.
Why you should not make the bed immediately after waking
During sleep, our bodies release moisture, which accumulates on sheets and pillows. If you make the bed right away, you do not give the bedding a chance to air out.
"If you sweat at night, there is moisture, and the bedding warms up from the heat of your body, so you need to give it a chance to dry and cool down before making the bed. Allergens like dust mites and microbes like bacteria thrive in warm, damp conditions," said Carolyn Forte, executive director of the GH Institute’s Cleaning Lab.
If you don’t give the bedding time to air out, mold, fungi, and bacteria that also love moisture can develop on it. This can lead to respiratory issues and spoil the bedding.
Bacteria in bedding can cause a musty smell that can linger even after washing.
When to make the bed
Experts recommend making the bed 30-60 minutes after waking up. First, you can gently shake the blanket and arrange the pillows, as well as check if the sheets are dry. If they are damp, they should be replaced.
"Making the bed every day is an important step in keeping your home tidy, and it's a great habit to develop," noted the expert.
How to create conditions for healthy sleep
Regular airing helps avoid excess moisture in the bed, but there are other useful practices. To ensure that your mattress and pillows are always dry and clean, it is recommended to use special protective covers — mattress protectors and encasements, which provide additional moisture protection.
Regular cleaning of the mattress is also an important aspect. You can use a special upholstery attachment or steam clean the mattress to help destroy dust mites.
Here are five simple ways to keep bedding fresh:
Air out blankets outdoors every month;
Do not use sheets with polyester blends and synthetic mattresses, as they can lead to increased sweating;
Choose bedding made from natural fabrics, such as cotton;
Use blankets with natural fillings, such as wool or silk;
Wash bedding every 1-2 weeks without using toxic laundry detergents.
By paying attention to moisture in bedding and creating favorable conditions for sleep, you not only improve comfort but also avoid various health issues. Proper care of bedding and mattresses is a step towards healthy sleep and well-being.
