Kyiv depends on external electricity: why power can be lost even without attacks.
According to ТСН: Kyiv is critically dependent on external electricity supplies, so there may be power outages even without Russian air attacks.
This was stated by the director of energy programs at the Razumkov Centre, Volodymyr Omelchenko.
Reasons for power outages
The expert explained why the capital has intensified the schedules for power outages, even if the main direction of Russian attacks was not aimed at Kyiv.
“Kyiv is also part of Ukraine's united energy system; it does not supply itself. It does not operate as a separate island, you understand.”
According to him, Kyiv can provide only about thirty percent of its total electricity needs.
“Today our consumption is 1500-2000 megawatts for the city of Kyiv, and it can supply independently about four hundred to five hundred megawatts, which is absolutely insufficient. This is just to power mainly critical infrastructure,” said the energy expert.
Thus, Kyiv is almost completely dependent on external energy sources, including nuclear power plants located in western Ukraine. If their capacity decreases, it leads to increased outage schedules and emergency situations in Kyiv, Omelchenko concluded.
Ukraine's capital, as part of the national energy system, is currently facing challenges related to insufficient internal resources. Dependence on external suppliers creates risks for the stability of electricity supply, which necessitates additional measures to ensure citizens have the necessary resources.
