Only 32 stations of Kyiv metro will protect from shelling: which shelters are dangerous.
According to ТСН: Although 46 out of 52 underground stations of the Kyiv metro serve as shelters, only 32 of them can provide protection from shelling and radiation.
The insufficient level of protection at some stations, particularly in the Obolon and Podil districts, as well as on the left bank of the capital, is related to their shallow depth — up to 10 meters. In contrast, other stations are located at a depth of over 50 meters.
Shallow stations are either not included in the shelter map in the 'Diia' app or marked as 'simple shelters'.
Requirements for shelters
According to the Civil Protection Code of Ukraine, the population can only take refuge temporarily in the simplest shelters when there are no other civil protection structures available. Such shelters are not considered protective structures.
Capacity of stations
According to official data, the stations with the highest capacity are 'Vokzalna', 'Palats Sportu', and 'Zoloti Vorota'.
In total, the stations, apart from those marked as 'simple shelters' in 'Diia', can accommodate about 40,000 people.
It should also be noted that officials who did not allow people into shelters during the attack from Russia face administrative and criminal liability.
This information emphasizes the importance of adequate protection for underground shelters in Kyiv, considering the current threat. Ensuring the safety of people during emergencies must be a priority, and stations that do not meet the requirements need urgent improvement or additional security measures.
