U.S. Dollar and Euro Exchange Rates in Ukraine: March 2023 Overview

According to TSN.ua: In early March 2023, the U.S. dollar was trading above 44.5 UAH in Ukraine. However, starting March 13, a downward trend began. By March 29, the selling rate for the dollar had fallen to 44.15 UAH, while the euro reached 51.03 UAH. During this period, the average buying rate for the dollar also declined, dropping from 43.85 to 43.60 UAH.

On March 30, the National Bank of Ukraine set the official exchange rate at 43.84 UAH per dollar and 50.49 UAH per euro. The dollar-to-euro ratio remained steady at 1.15 dollars per euro. In the third decade of March, currency transaction data revealed that the average daily volume of currency purchases exceeded sales by 195 million dollars, indicating strong demand. Notably, demand for foreign currency in Ukraine has doubled compared to January and February levels.

Market Participants' Expectations

Amid these developments, market participants are questioning what is driving the currency market and what to expect from exchange rates between March 30 and April 12. Many Ukrainians are also weighing whether to buy or sell cash currency. As of March 29, the dollar and euro rates at exchange offices remain a key indicator for assessing the currency market's direction.

The decline in the dollar's value in Ukraine may reflect broader economic fluctuations, including shifts in currency demand. The heightened demand observed in the market could stem from various factors, such as economic expectations, political instability, or changes in international trade. In turn, market participants are trying to interpret these trends, which could influence their decisions on buying or selling currency in the near term.
