Russian strikes caused an oil spill in the Black Sea: consequences for the ecosystem.
According to ТСН: Russian strikes on the port infrastructure of Odesa have led to an ecological disaster: sunflower oil spilled from damaged tanks has polluted the sea. This seriously threatens the region's ecosystem.
Expert's comment
The Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at NaUKMA, Yevhen Khlobystov, commented on the situation on the air of the 'Kyiv 24' channel. He emphasized the importance of remote sensing for accurately determining the source and extent of the pollution.
Impact of weather conditions
The expert noted that the rate of oil degradation in seawater depends on weather conditions and the state of the sea.
'Weather primarily affects this. Whether the sea will be calm or stormy. As of today, the Black Sea is relatively calm. So, unfortunately, even a small amount of oil that will harm the environment will have a greater negative effect,'he noted.
Yevhen Khlobystov also added that oil capsules faster than petroleum, so within 5-7 days, the oil film on the sea should diminish.
Wide oil spill
It was previously reported that the sunflower oil spill near the port of 'Pivdenny' had spread to the shores of Odesa. As a result, the oil film covered the surface of the sea at the 'Otrada', 'Langeron', and 'Zoloty Bereh' beaches.
In addition, the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Oleg Kiper, reported that rescue services were unable to localize the leak in the first days after the shelling due to continuous enemy attacks on the port.
This situation indicates serious ecological consequences of military actions in the region. Sea pollution can significantly affect the ecosystem and the health of local residents. Authorities continue to work on solving the problem, but the consequences may be felt for a long time.
