Emergency power outages in Kyiv: what caused the substation blackout

According to ТСН: Emergency power outages have been implemented in Kyiv today due to damage at one of the substations supplying electricity to the capital. The director of energy programs at the Razumkov Center noted that the incident was quickly localized, so the situation is gradually stabilizing.

“Currently, the blocks are gaining power. We hope that critical infrastructure will be restored by the end of the day,” adds the expert.

What is known about the situation in the energy system

On January 9, Kyiv experienced the aftermath of a massive Russian strike, which resulted in interruptions to electricity, heating, and water supply in the capital. Parts of the city were left without light and heating, and there were also reported problems with the operation of electric transport.

As of the morning, energy workers managed to restore electricity supply for 588 thousand families who were without light the day before. However, on the Left Bank of Kyiv, about 60 thousand households still remained without electricity. DTEK reported that repair crews continue to work continuously.

The large-scale shelling also affected the heating supply system. The Prime Minister noted that the capital has started the heating supply process, and heating generating facilities have begun to deliver heat-carrying medium. The process of connecting residential buildings is ongoing, and full heating is expected throughout the day.

The situation with electricity remains more complicated. The right bank of Kyiv (except for the Holosiivskyi and Pecherskyi districts) has been switched to planned outage schedules, while emergency outages are still in effect on the Left Bank. The head of the government reported that the energy networks sustained significant damage, and due to frost, the load on the system increased due to the active use of electric heaters. It is expected that by the end of the day, the city will be able to fully switch to planned electricity supply schedules.

Due to the unstable situation in the energy system, electric transport in Kyiv has partially stopped. On the Left Bank, its operation has been completely halted; however, buses that duplicate the main routes have been launched. On the Right Bank, the intervals of metro movement have been increased to 10–12 minutes on all three lines.

The consequences of Russian attacks have also been noted in other regions. On the night of January 10, the enemy struck the energy infrastructure of the Dnipropetrovsk region, resulting in over 130 thousand consumers being left without electricity. Consumers on the left bank of the Dnipro, as well as in the Saksahanskyi and partially in the Pokrovskyi districts of Kryvyi Rih, remained without electric supply. Emergency recovery operations are ongoing in the region.

Due to these attacks and difficult weather conditions, there have been delays on the railway. On Saturday, a number of passenger trains in various regions of Ukraine had significant deviations from their schedules.

Thus, the situation with energy supply remains tense, but energy workers are working on restoring stability. Kyiv and other regions continue to deal with the consequences of the attacks, but electricity and heating supply is gradually being restored. Authorities urge citizens to save energy and adhere to outage schedules.
