Ukraine's Energy Grid Under Strain: Zelenskyy Reports on Restoration and Defense Efforts
According to UATV: Ukraine's energy situation remains severe, with Kyiv, Kharkiv, and the regions of Sumy and Poltava facing particular difficulties. On February 4, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy provided an update on the restoration of electricity and heating supplies across the nation. He noted that in Kyiv alone, more than 200 crews are working to restore heat, yet over 1,100 apartment buildings in the capital remain without it. This crisis unfolds against the backdrop of a sustained Russian campaign targeting civilian infrastructure.
Zelenskyy highlighted Zaporizhzhia as a region suffering intensely from enemy drone attacks, which damage infrastructure and endanger lives. A recent Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia has increased the number of casualties to 12, including four children. In response to these events, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has been tasked with determining the scale of aid required for the affected regions.
The Ukrainian President emphasized the urgent need to strengthen air defenses to protect critical infrastructure facilities.
He has also instructed the Prime Minister to compile specific data on the levels of additional support needed for communities nationwide. The state of the energy sector is a top government priority as the country continues to grapple with the immense challenges brought by the ongoing war.
Condition of the Energy Infrastructure
The condition of Ukraine's energy infrastructure remains critically important amid prolonged military conflict. Restoring power and heating is essential not only for maintaining city functions but also for ensuring the stability of social services. Preparing for potential new attacks on this infrastructure is a vital step to mitigate further negative consequences for the population and the country's economy.
