EU Abandons Traditional Ties with Russia: Lithuanian MEP Warns of Emerging Security Risks.
A New Challenge for European Security
According to TSN.ua: Lithuanian Member of the European Parliament Dainius Žalimas has raised alarms about potential new threats to European security amid shifting policies in the United States and certain EU member states. He stressed that the European Union has effectively moved away from its conventional relationship with Russia and announced plans to halt energy imports from the country by 2027.
Žalimas pointed out that breaking away from long-standing ties with Moscow could create fresh security challenges.
“Another threat to our security might emerge,” he warned. He also urged vigilance regarding administrations that may continue to influence political dynamics across Europe.
“We need to be aware that if similar administrations stay in power,”he added.
Energy Hurdles and Geopolitical Shifts
Against this backdrop, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s decision to suspend gas transit to Ukraine stands out as a significant development. This move could further strain the region’s energy security. Meanwhile, according to Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are nearing a peace agreement—a topic that remains highly relevant as Europe’s geopolitical landscape evolves.
Žalimas’s comments underscore the need to closely monitor and respond to changes in the international arena, especially concerning Europe’s energy security. Abandoning traditional ties with Russia and rerouting energy supplies could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability. Hungary’s halt of gas transit to Ukraine only highlights the complexity of energy relations in this context, demanding careful, measured decisions from European nations.
