Icy Conditions Halt Horse Rescue in Zaporizhzhia, Leaving 98 Animals at Grave Risk.
Horse Evacuation Crisis in Zaporizhzhia Region
According to TSN.ua: A critical rescue operation for horses at a stud farm in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region has been halted due to severe cold and ice, placing 98 animals in immediate danger of death. The outdoor temperature has plummeted to -17 degrees Celsius, making evacuation efforts impossible. While two hundred and fifty horses were successfully evacuated last week, these 98 remain trapped. The farm has been operational since the 1990s, and this incident highlights the extreme challenges of operating in a war zone during winter.
Why the Evacuation Was Stopped
The evacuation was forced to stop because anti-drone nets, installed for protection, have frozen over and now block the exit route for horse transporters. The height of the horse carrier, at 3.85 meters, prevents it from passing underneath the sagging, iced-up nets. Compounding the crisis, the number of staff at the stud farm has dropped from 103 to 55, severely limiting the manpower available for rescue efforts.
Workers express deep concern for the animals' safety under these conditions.
"It is much safer for them when they are grazing in the meadows," noted Vasyl Panenko.Mykhailo Sych also emphasized the logistical nightmare, stating,
"Because of the ice, the nets have sagged, and my horse carrier—its height is 3.85, almost four meters—cannot even leave the enterprise."Consequently, the situation remains critically dangerous for the horses, who risk perishing from a combination of warfare and extreme weather. This case underscores how natural disasters can exacerbate humanitarian crises in conflict zones, stressing the urgent need for measures to protect both animals and people.
