Snowstorm Paralyzes Europe: People Dead, Hundreds of Flights Canceled.
According to ТСН: European countries have been hit by severe snowstorms and icy conditions, causing serious transportation issues. As a result of the worsening weather conditions on the continent, at least six people have died.
Situation in France
In the department of Landes in the southwest of France, three people died due to icy conditions. Two others were victims of traffic accidents in Paris. In one of the accidents, a passenger car collided with a truck, while in another, a taxi, due to snow, crashed into the curb and fell into the Marne River.
“More snow is expected in the country today,” said French transport minister Philippe Tabaro.
The national meteorological service has issued an orange weather warning for 38 departments due to snow and icy conditions. Numerous train services have been canceled in many regions, and at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport, 40% of flights were canceled so that technical staff could clear the runways of snow.
Situation in the Balkans and the Netherlands
The Balkans also experienced snowfall and heavy rains. In the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo, one woman died from a falling tree under the weight of wet snow, according to police reports.
At Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, more than 400 flights have been canceled today, leaving hundreds of passengers without the ability to continue their journeys, forming long lines at airline counters where people waited for information about flight resumption.
“Our snow removal teams are working around the clock to keep the runways operational,” said the airport administration.
The Dutch airline KLM canceled many flights, explaining the situation as being due to “extreme” weather conditions and delays in the supply of anti-icing fluids. Additionally, another 600 flights scheduled to depart from Schiphol on Wednesday have been canceled.
Train services in the Netherlands have also suffered significant disruptions: Eurostar trains from Amsterdam to Paris were canceled or delayed. Furthermore, train services were briefly suspended in the country due to failures in IT systems.
Arctic Cold in Europe
Europe is gripped by Arctic cold, bringing heavy snowfall and extremely low temperatures. In the southeast of England, temperatures have been recorded as low as -12.5°C, while in the eastern regions of France and the Bavarian Alps, frosts reach -22°C. These conditions have led to transportation collapses, disruptions in energy systems, and even human casualties.
As a result of the severe weather conditions, not only people have suffered, but infrastructure has also been affected. Railway and aviation communications are seriously disrupted, and warnings about dangerous conditions will continue to be in effect in several countries. The situation is complicated by forecasts of further snowfall that could exacerbate the crisis on the continent.
