Trump appoints special envoy to Greenland: what it means for the island's status.
According to ТСН: U.S. President Donald Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana governor Jeff Landry as the special envoy of the United States to Greenland.
Trump made this announcement on the social network Truth Social. He emphasized that Landry understands the strategic importance of Greenland for U.S. national security and will clearly advocate for American interests.
“Jeff understands how important Greenland is to our national security, and he will vigorously pursue our country's interests in ensuring the safety, protection, and survival of our allies and, in essence, the entire world”
It is currently unclear whether Landry, who became governor in January 2024, will have to leave his position due to the new appointment. The White House, the office of the Prime Minister of Greenland, and representatives of Landry did not provide comments.
Donald Trump previously stated that Greenland—a self-governing territory within Denmark—should become part of the U.S. for security considerations and interests in the island's natural resources. Jeff Landry has also expressed his support for this position.
Specifically, on January 9, he commented on the social network X that the idea of Greenland joining the U.S. could be beneficial for both countries.
Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly rejected any proposals regarding changes to the island's status. Nevertheless, recently the U.S. and Greenland expressed their intention to develop cooperation based on “mutual respect.”
Greenland's Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldt noted that public statements by American officials regarding the future of the island raise concerns among the local population and require an open dialogue with the United States.
It is worth noting that earlier Trump approved a new space strategy, according to which by 2030 there should be a permanent base with a nuclear reactor on the Moon.
This appointment underscores the growing U.S. attention to Greenland, which is viewed not only as a territory with rich natural resources but also as an important strategic asset in the global security context. The prospect of changing Greenland's status continues to provoke active discussions on the international stage, considering Denmark's lasting resilience on the issue of the island's national sovereignty.
