India Escorts Cargo Ships Through the Strait of Hormuz: Who the Navy Is Protecting.
India's Naval Mission in the Strait of Hormuz
According to TSN.ua: India has launched a naval escort operation for cargo vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The initiative aims to safeguard Indian-flagged ships in the Persian Gulf region. Two liquefied gas tankers flying the Indian flag, the Shivalik and the Nanda Devi, have already successfully crossed the strait. Both vessels are owned by the Shipping Corporation of India.
Additionally, the oil tanker Jag Prakash, which was transporting gasoline from Oman to Africa, has safely exited the eastern section of the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Navy's Operation Sankalp was initiated on June 19, 2019, with the primary goal of protecting Indian-flagged ships in this strategically vital area. As part of this mission, 23 Indian Navy warships have been deployed across the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.
Why This Operation Matters for India
Roughly 23,000 Indian seafarers are employed on commercial vessels in the region, and about 24 ships are currently positioned near the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Germany and the United Kingdom have declined U.S. President Donald Trump's call for assistance in securing shipping routes through the strait. This refusal highlights the growing importance of India's naval operation in maintaining the safety of maritime corridors in the area.
India's naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz represents a critical step toward protecting Indian vessels in one of the world's most strategic maritime chokepoints. With approximately 23,000 Indian sailors working in the region, securing their transport routes is vital not only for India's economy but also for the stability of global maritime trade. The decision by Germany and the UK to opt out of security efforts removes the possibility of a broader international coalition, making India's unilateral initiative all the more significant.
